Treatment choices for erectile dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction is the persistent inability of a man to achieve and maintain an erection strong enough for intercourse. Factors responsible for erection are :

1. The brain, which has a fine network of erogenous stimuli.
2. The nerves, which pass messages from the brain to the penis.
3. The blood vessels in the male organ.

An erection occurs when the arteries supplying the penis dilate, thus increasing the blood flow to it. 70 % of erectile dysfunction cases are caused by psychological causes, such as fear of age, inhibitions, ignorance, fear, stress, boredom, embarrassment, poor body image, depression, traumatic sexual escapades, pressure to perform, unrealistic expectations, performance anxiety and more.

30% suffer from physical causes where the blood vessels of the male organ are damaged because of diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, spinal injury, excessive drinking and smoking.

The erection problem may be both either psychological or physical. It is psychological if:

1. You wake up with an erection
2. You can masturbate perfectly well
3. You have had satisfactory penetrative sex
4. Your problem occurred suddenly

It is physical if:

1. Your erection is feeble and does not strengthen even while you sleep, wake up or masturbate
2. You try and try but do not succeed
3. The onset comes gradually, insidiously

If you have puffed arteries in your male organ, it is likely that blood vessels of your heart are unhealthy. So ED can be a sign that a cardiogram is overdue.

There are many treatment choices available for erectile dysfunction. They are injections, implants, pumps. Surgery is an option for some. And then of course there are male enhancement supplements and erection pills. These pills improve blood flow in the penile area and increase the working capabilities of the muscles and nerves responsible for the erection.
